For all you horse people out there:10 things that you think that city slickers should know about horse people?
I am doing a blog for english class and my topic is top ten things that city slickers should know about horse people. Some of mine are things like how we don't like drama, how much they care about their horses and more. So that got me wondering, what are your top ten things that you think that city slickers should know about horse people and why?
1) Getting down and dirty is half the fun.
2) You get companionship from an amazing animal.
3) We may look all clean and perfect at shows, but at the barn we're covered in mud.
4) You Make a lot of friends- human and animal alike.
5) We gain a lot of leadership skills from riding.
6) When you get bucked off, get up, dust off your breeches, and get right back on lol.
7) Riding takes skill and hard work. You don't just get on and sit there.
We know the value of love and care because those things give us a great companion.
9) Riding is a difficult thing, and it takes a long time to get good at it.
10) You have to be a horse person at heart to take to riding and stick with it. Usually this horse person shows up at about the age of 3.
11) We sacrifice so much for our horses, and no non-horse person will ever understand why.
12) Owning a horse is like owning freedom. It's pretty much yours on a loan.
13) Barns don't smell bad, they smell good.
14) No non-horse person will ever understand the bond between a person and their horse.
15) Riding is like candy. You love it while you have it and miss it when it's gone.
16) A REAL horse person will brave any weather to ride: Rain, snow, sleet, hail, 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
17) There's three things you need to ride: courage, love, and a bit of insanity.
18) Just because our boots are "dirty" doesn't mean we can't wear them everywhere.
19) Horse people have a one track mind. You'd be surprised how many of us end up writing essays about horses for school without intending it.
20) A horse person will never be afraid to get back on, and if they are, they work past it.
21) A lot of people think riding a horse is easy. Well, let's put them on one, let em canter, and count how many milliseconds it takes for them to fall off.
22) To ride, you have to be unafraid of getting dirty.
23) You have to be willing to put up with your best friends thinking riding is stupid.
24) Riding is not just a sport- It's an art.
25) Horse people are always there for other horse people- Even when we don't ride the same way.
26) There are always petty disagreements. We get over them quick. Why? Our horses are good at conflict resolution.
27) Don't send me to a psychologist when my attitude is off. Send me to the barn. It's your fault you didn't let me go these past 3 days.
28) No matter how long it's been since we've ridden, we get right back in the saddle and remember it all.
29) Even after a bad fall, a horse lover never stops going "LET ME BACK ON A HORSE ALREADY!"
30) People think we're crazy to ride horses. Well, I think they're crazy to NOT ride horses.
31) A horse is not an animal. It's a person.
32) Say what you want about me, about how I dress, how I talk. If you say one word about my riding boots or my horse, you're getting your a** kicked with a pair of spurs.
33) A horse person knows you never, ever, ever let a teenage boy see the spur page of a riding catalog. Otherwise you have to deal with them saying "I want a pair of those pointy cowboy ones."
34) When you walk into our room, it's immediately evident we ride. Why? We have ribbons, posters, books, computer games, and magazines about them. But it's usually the muddy pair of boots in the middle of the room that tips people off.
35) No. You don't say "What a pretty horsie! Can I ride him?" unless you want your face bashed in.
36) Go ahead and mess with me. Keep in mind I have a source to the things you find VERY disgusting.
37) When a friend asks if they can come to the barn with you, you say "It means walking half a mile in the mud to catch my horse, then getting covered in more mud while grooming, then cleaning yourself off with a towel, or at least attempting to, then getting in the saddle and working HARD for at least an hour, perhaps getting thrown off, then untacking, brushing the sweat off, giving a carrot and getting horse slobber on you, and then walking the half mile in the mud again to put the horse back in the field." They immediately turn around and leave while you grin.
38) Horses are better then anything. They're even better then your favorite clothing brand.
39) You give me gucci, I wear it to the barn and come home in mud and horsehair. My fault? No.
40) Our idea of the perfect shopping trip is spending four hours in the tack store.
41) Horses+Leather+Girl=What more could you ask for?
42) It is NOT a girly sport.
43) Can I have your hairbrush? I need to brush out my horse's tail. He has burrs in it.
44) There's no end to our list of things non-horse people will never understand.
45) I have $3000 to spend. New saddle or new car? New saddle.
46) Horse catalogs are better then Seventeen magazine.
47) We're up to any challenge... As long as we can wear our riding boots.
48) Riding boots are definitely better then high heels.
49) Glamour? A clean shirt and breeches is glamour to us.
50) Don't mess with me. My horse and I know where you live, and we have horse power.
51) You ask me to come to your sweet sixteen. I say no. You say why? I say "It's my horse's sixteenth birthday that day."
52) Horseback riding is not a sport. It's a lifestyle.
53) You kick me, I know someone who can kick 100x harder then you.
54) No. Horses are not stupid. If you think they're stupid then you're the stupid one.
55) Horseback riding definitely takes skill. Why do I say that? I watched a girl who couldn't ride try to jump a fence. She was bouncing on the horse's back at the canter. The horse reared in protest. She fell off.
56) No, it is not eventing. It's Eventing.
57) You ask me who Lucinda Fredericks is when I bring her up at school. I tell you to get a life.
58) It's amazing how clueless non-horse people are. You ask them where horse country is. They take a wild guess "California?"
59) No, no, you can't wear my spurs. Why? They're MY spurs, for MY purposes, for MY encouragement. Put them down.
60) You can insult me. Remember I have a pair of spurs and 3 whips at my house.
61) I tell you to pick up your dog's poop when it goes to the bathroom in my yard. You say no. The next day there's a pile of horse poop in your driveway.
62) You're riding down the road on your horse. You stop at the red light. Somebody curses at you from their car window. Your horse calmly kicks in their headlights and then you ride off as the light changes.
63) No. I don't want to come to your graduation. Why? My horse needs a bath.
64) You think a horse thinks like this: ...
My horse thinks: "Wow she's an idiot."
65) There is one thing you need to form a bond with your horse. It's called an apple.
Yeah, that's more then 10.
