How come famous jazz/blues singers from back then sang the same songs?

I'm talking about Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Louis Armstrong, and the likes...how come they all have the same songs in their albums? Songs like "Come Rain or Come Shine", "At Last", "Stars Fell", "Summertime" were sang by at least two of these singers...how come? Whom do the songs belong to?

It's not that that's ALL they sang, it's that those are the brilliant compositions. They all did less popular numbers, but in the end, people want to hear the standards. Cole Porter, The Duke, etc. They're the ones that made the songs.
