What comprises an "Art Song?"?
I have been looking at a number of colleges, with the intent of maybe, in a couple years, going to school for vocal music. All of them refer to "art songs," in various languages. Now, I know that what they mean is to avoid cheap-and-easy folk songs, and that art songs do not refer to arias.
However, my question is in regards to the gray area(s). For instance, what about cantatas?
Any help would be appreciated.
Art songs generally refer to a piece that is A. Soloistic in nature and usually accompanied by piano. B. A stand alone piece that is intended to be performed in recitals or smaller occasions. C. Not part of a staged show (opera or other types of shows). Cantatas do not count. If something is pulled from a cantata it is called an oratorio. Usually books of art songs will be clearly titled as an art song book- a widely used one is the 24 Italian Art Songs (if you wanted to check out examples). There are some "folk songs" that are considered art songs, you can find the acceptable ones in books like "56 Songs You Love to Sing" or anything that has a collection of art songs.
