What happened to Whiplash's legs (Best answer)?

I saw Iron Man 2 and thought Whiplash was the most exciting character. However...I don't get what happened to his legs. He was on the track at Monaco, Iron Man defeated him, and then he had no lower legs as the cops dragged him away. He was also missing his legs when Tony Stark talked to him in the cell. Were they severed when he was slammed up against the side of the track by the car? Had they always been prosthetic and they popped off in the fight?

Whiplash had his legs the whole time.. it just seems like they were missing after the fight at the track because of the way he was dragged out by the cops and while Stark talked to him in the cell he was sitting in a bench but his legs were intact. They weren't severed when the car slammed him up against the side of the track because after that he still fought Iron Man after he had kicked the car out of the way.
